SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, OPENING NIGHT
Opening Night of the San Diego International Film Festival with MARSHALL screening at the Balboa Theatre, followed by a panel including the filmmakers, and an after-party at the Westgate Hotel.
The film is about young Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases.
MARSHALL MOVIE, LOS ANGELES PREMIERE
The cast and creators of #MarshallMovie celebrated the upcoming release of the film with a special screening in Los Angeles.
Mayor Eric Garcetti proclaimed October 2, 2017 to be THURGOOD MARSHALL DAY, as the date was also marked by being to the day, the 50th anniversary of the swearing in of Justice Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice.
INVICTUS GAMES TORONTO
The third Invictus Games was hosted in Toronto, Canada, and welcomed more than 550 competitors of 17 nations competing in a dozen adaptive sports.
Established by Prince Harry in 2014, The Invictus Games are the only international adaptive supporting event for injured active duty and veteran service members. These Games use the power of sports to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation, and generate a wider understanding of and respect for those who serve their country, and their loved ones.
The word 'Invictus' means 'unconquered.' It embodies the fighting spirit of the wounded, ill, and injured service personnel and what these tenacious men and women can achieve post-injury. These games transform empathy into empowerment by showcasing the unconquerable spirit of wounded warriors.
PLANT WITH PURPOSE, PLANTING HOPE GALA
September 23rd was a record setting evening, raising more than $410,000, which will be put to work immediately reversing rural poverty, launching and funding five Farmer Field Schools, improving farm yields, and cultivating healthy families.
Plant with Purpose planted more than 4.6 million trees last year, served over 202,000 people in seven countries, and helped farmers to save and invest over $3.4 Million of their own money into their communities, from Haiti to Burundi, to Thailand.
With the funds raised, 19 cases of increased crop yields, 19 orchards will be started, and 8,600 more trees will be planted.
QUEENSBOROUGH GRAND OPENING
NYC inspired cocktail lounge located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. Invitees vibed in an 'Empire State of Mind' as they celebrated, making their way through the luxurious Uptown cocktail parlor, enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres by Executive Chef Taylor Houseman, sipping on a ‘New Yorker’ at the marble-topped bar, and toasting with a ‘Negroni, My Way’ from the bookcase-lined library den. Guests were among the first to descend through the subway turnstile into San Diego’s newest underground lounge. Directed downstairs by vintage mosaic subway signs, the metropolitan-inspired social club will host live entertainment and additional specialty cocktails unique to Downtown’s subterranean ambiance.
ST. GERMAIN CHILDREN'S CHARITY
St. Germaine Children's Charity is celebrating 33 years as a positive force in the fight against child abuse. Since 1984, they have provided financial and in-kind support to San Diego County's abused and neglected children through grants to local agencies that serve them. Tonight was a friend-raiser to recruit new members, committed to stopping child abuse.

LOS ANGELES POLICE MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
The Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation Celebrity Poker Tournament & Casino Night was held at the Avalon Hollywood. The LAPMF assists LAPD family members who have experienced unforeseen catastrophic circumstances including illness, injury and death, and assists widows and orphans of officers killed in the line of duty. Without the help of the foundation, many children of officers killed would not have the opportunity to attend college, and would lack basic funds for sporting activities and medical expenses. The LAPMF has operated since 1972 with no direct taxpayer funds.
CITY GALA, Disney Concert Hall
City Gala honored Quincy Jones, Russell Simmons, John Paul DeJoria, and John Travolta. City Gala supports charitable organizations with missions to advance humanitarian causes. Programs and initiatives include advancing educational efforts, mentorship programs, equal rights advocacy, climate change, research, shelter for the homeless, and access to health and medicare.
RENDEZVOUS IN THE ZOO
The RITZ gala raised $1.4 million to benefit animals from the cliff areas of the San Diego Zoo Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks exhibit. Read the June 27 issue to see photos not included in the article.
MIRACLE BABIES WHITE PARTY
Miracle Babies mission is to provide support and financial assistance to families with critically ill newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit; and to enhance the well-being of mothers, children, and their families through education, prevention and medical care.
TUX 'n' TENNIES
